It’s unlikely that China’s strong support of nudges can be explained exclusively by a general enthusiasm for them as a behavior change approach. The authors of the study offer other possible explanations, including the country’s most pressing problems, such as air pollution (generating support for nudges involving the environment, health and safety) and high trust in government policies. Chinese respondents may also be used to their (authoritarian) government’s mandates and bans as “background facts,” making nudges less objectionable—or they may have felt some pressure to support potential government policies in their answers.
